Package Requirement Film Property Recommended Material Description
Retard spoilage and mold growth. Oxygen Barrier Saran or Nylon Spoilage and mold growth are caused by bacteria which grow in the presence of oxygen.
Prevent weight loss. Moisture Barrier Polyethylene Meat and cheese contain a large amount of water and will loose weight due to dehydration.
Prevent freezer burn Moisture Barrier Polyethylene Freezer burn is due to loss of moisture on the product surface resulting in a hard dry coating.
Protect product Durability Nylon or Polyester Packaging must be able to withstand normal handling and shipping abuse. Resist puncturing and abrasion.
Prevent migration of product oils into or through package Chemical resistance Nylon The fats or oils in some products can penetrate or even dissolve the package.
Product is cooked in the package Temperature resistance Nylon Frozen product is boiled or microwaved in the package.
